Manchester, England | 10.11.12 October 2016

Day 1 Today we focus on the first 30 minutes of a lesson - exploring, structuring and journaling. Of course journaling can be done at the end of the lesson too.

Using the case of 14-8 and the ten frames participants have, we discussed learning theories.

Example of board work that helps student wrie their journal in that lesson.

We also look at long division as a problem-solving process and how it develops number sense.

We look at learning of times table.

We end the day with bar models and how to present word problems to students especially younger or weaker ones. The word by word unfolding of a story and the use of square tiles to build models.

Day 2

Concept of equal parts kicked the day off.
We discussed formative assessment and using guided and independent practice to do accurate assessment.

I shared three standard strategies for challenging advanced learners and looked at three examples of challenging advanced learners in lessons to learn new concepts, lessons to consolidate and lessons with word problems.
