Coaching Children in Mathematics

I did one session with parents / tutors of Primary 3 / 4 children on geometry and area, perimeter. The class of 20 or so parents discussed how to help children learn to the point where core skills become habits. The two core skills discussed today are (1) reading word problems and (2) visualization.

Parents were introduced to the idea of CPA and using square tiles, tangrams and apps to develop visualization. Also the use of good questioning techniques.

We also discussed informal learning before structured learning and those before practice. It is pointless to practice if children have not learned what they are supposed to.

Finally we did one performance task.
